This anime is sponsored by NFL Japan and aired in countries like korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong and the Philippines. The story revolves around high school student Kobayakawa Sena who loves football and has a incredible talent when it comes to running, he has an intense agility. He had a remarkable talent in running because of bullies. In his younger days he was taught by his friend Riku to run away from bullies that is why he developed his talent. This caught the eye of Deimon High School Football Captain and quarterback Yoichi Hiruma who forces Sena to become the team’s running back. I almost dropped this after reading the first 2 chapters because it was so generic, but decided I should at least finish the volume. You know, since it's supposed to be a pretty good sports manga/anime and all.

USA!I don't really care too much about the sport myself. I had some fun playing it in grade 10 but that is the cap of my interest in it.

But like I said in the introduction paragraph, this here is a bit of a modern classic in the sports manga genre, so being the sports lit connoisseur that I am you know I had to give it a go.Just like what I got from the first two chapters, it's still a pretty generic sports manga, but it does also have some interesting elements that keep me wanting to read more. The main character is actually pretty interesting-besides being generically wimpy-and the supporting cast is also pretty fun. I enjoyed how the MC actually wanted to be the team manager instead of a player, but because of the evil insane captain of the football team he's forced to play instead. That's technically a spoiler I guess, but in actuality it's extremely obvious that of course the super fast MC would play.

I also like how they made his identity a secret, because that will definitely cause some juicy misunderstandings and awkward scenarios. If the American football aspect wasn't American enough for you, the art makes it feel even more American because of Yusuke Murata's cartoony style. I'm actually so torn on the art. The cartoon-yness has me shook but at the same time I love it. Especially the cartoony way the bodies are drawn.

I read manga and expect to see a specific style of art, so when that expectation is subverted it's jarring, and not in a good way. But by the time I got to the end of the volume I got more used to it. I'm actually now looking forward to reading more of this series specifically so I can see more of the art. But it's still a fun read and this reader is moving on to the next volume. So, my favorite genre of anime/manga is sports manga, as weird as that might seem to even myself - because I honestly don't care about any sort of sports at all in real life, but make it fake and it's my favorite. Eyeshield 21 is no exception - and, actually, the only sports manga that I've really read - oh, I've read a few chapters here and there of Kuroko no Basket, or Kenichi: the Mightiest Disciple, but I've never really sat down and just read the manga until Eyeshield 21.The story foll So, my favorite genre of anime/manga is sports manga, as weird as that might seem to even myself - because I honestly don't care about any sort of sports at all in real life, but make it fake and it's my favorite. Accidentally ends up joining the football team. American football team.

It feels weird to say 'American football' because I'm American, but it's stressed so much in-volume that I just sort of have to say it that way. And, like all sports anime/manga, it's so fun. It's so stressful, sometimes - though not really in this first volume - because even though nobody's probably going to die (I'd watch my step around Hiruma, though), it's just tense.I did read the first ninety or so chapters of this online before purchasing this, so this was sort-of a re-read for me - but really, I just remembered which characters I love and I get to look forward to watching them become those characters. People like Ishimaru, who I really only love because his name is Ishimaru. Shin, because of the eyebrows and the cute and the seriousness and I love.

Jumonji, who isn't actually given his name in this volume and who develops into such a great person that I also love. But, really - sports manga is the best. And even if you don't think you'll be into it, you're probably wrong. This book is about an average boy named Sena who runs errands for his sister all the time.

But now that he's going to her school, she's clucking over him and trying to protect him again, encouraging him to make friends by joining clubs (but she issues a stiff warning: stay away from anything to do with a guy called Hiruma!).

Sena meets a large student named Kurita, who shares his woes over never being able to get enough people to join the American football club, and sympathetic Sena agrees to join as manager if it will help kind Kurita out. But when sleazy bullies target Sena yet again, he runs from their abuse and shows his incredible running skills-which are accidentally seen by none other than Hiruma, who turns out to be the American football club's quarterback. After some blackmail-laden recruiting for their upcoming game-because they have to have enough players or they will be disqualified-Hiruma wants Sena to play on the team, not just do manager duties. Mamori is horrified that he's associating with the school's devil, so Hiruma decides to protect Sena's identity by making him wear a green eyeshield on his helmet so no one can tell who he is (and then other sports clubs won't be able to track him down and recruit him).

Will his 'golden legs' win the day? Or will Mamori step in to protect Sena once again? This is a shounen manga-a book aimed at boys-but as with most sports stories, there is exquisite focus on the team's relationship with each other and their desire to win and do their best. It's interesting that the story incorporates a girl who protects a boy, and on top of that she's very intelligent, which turns out to be intriguing even to genius Hiruma. And speaking of Hiruma, he's an incredible part of why the manga is what it is. He's terrible, not at all likable if you knew him in real life, not above hurting and harassing the people he allies with, but wow, is he fun to read about.

You love watching him get the upper hand and how quickly he figures out how to manipulate people. The art features exaggerated 'types' fairly often-Kurita, an overweight and strong lineman, is basically drawn as a huge blimp, and Hiruma looks like an outright demon. Some of the characters they play on the field are stereotypes too; in this first volume, they play the Koigahama Cupids and all the players have girlfriends and are beautiful prissy-boys. By the end, you really get invested in Sena staying on the team and you wonder what will happen next-what's the future of the Deimon Devilbats? It's not about winning-it's about the journey-but Hiruma will tell you a different story. This series currently holds the title of My Mostest Favoritest Manga. It is the typical premise of an unsuspected wimpy teen – one that is bullied for most of his life finds his cause in a sport – American Football. Murata's illustrations were beautifully rendered a tad unrefined, but I believe that this series is an earlier work of his, which shows his growth. All in all, Eyeshield 21: The Boy With the Golden Legs is a wonderful beginning to a new series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more. What I love the most about this manga is that it gives Japan's perspective on an aspect of American culture. We see football being one of the most unpopular sports in Japan and easily looked over in favor of other sports.

Meanwhile, in American its one of the most highly anticipated sports. We also see a group of students who are dedicated to playing football and being the best; yet, there is no festishization of the American sport at all. Too often western cultures are depicted as something to mimic in literature, especially in Meiji Era Japanese literature. This manga is utterly devoid of that mimicry, yet, still places a strong emphasis on its admiration for the sport. I think this a wonderful poststructural text for the classroom because it offers a different perspective on American football from the eyes of a country who does not place much emphasis on it. This manga would definitely appeal more to young boys because of its sport-centric themes, and I think this same thematic element would engage these readers with the manga format more. Typically young boys are not avid readers, so, introducing a manga focusing on football may engage them with its fast pace and emphasis on the mechanics of American football.

As I read this manga, I realized I was learning more terminology and plays than I did watching football every Sunday! I would try to incorporate this manga into my class as a supplemental text, specifically on a suggested outside reading list. This book shows the audience that you can concern anything if you put your mind to it or work hard to complete it, and that you should not say never to anything because you believe you cannot do it without trying. As well as that your friends always have your back. Yes I believe this will have long lasting value to the readers who took the time to read this book from word to word not just skim it.This book was captivating in my opinion because I could not stop reading the book after two chapters. I have read the book more than two times already and still enjoy it.

So I do not find this book boring even now. I believe I can relate to the character Sena because his some won who say probably a lot as I do but when he tries to do some it he can succeed. This is the same thing I say but when I put my mind to it even if I’m nerves or scared I can still do it. Just he does in the book I do in real life.

This book was funny, serious at some times, and dramatic. This book is well written because it has lots of details in the story and put in many parts which keeps the readers interested in to the plot. As well as he add some interesting quotes in the book like “There is no player in this world who has not lost before all those who play on the field will have tasted defeat, however the best players will give everything he’s got to stand up again, ordinary players take a while to get back on their feet, losers will remain flat on the field” (pg16). Which is true and some people can relate to those word that has been said because they have experience it them self. But that’s not the only point this book also has a nice tone of the characters like when one of them said “If they score 99 points well score 100 points.” ( pg10) it gives a sense of the characters will of Making it happen. This book has great strength because I can connect with many of the readers. It keeps them interested in the story as well because its entertaining. The weakness of this book is that it needed to be longer.

Eyeshield 21 is a unique sports manga as it is one centered around American Gridiron Football. Japan obviously doesn't play much American football so this manga starts at the bare assumption that the reader knows absolutely nothing about the sport. For someone like me – an American who has grown up learning about, and loving the game with a passion, this is a very interesting read for me to undertake, breaking down football at such elementary and basic level. It also takes place at a high school, so it also has many of the elements of high school drama mangas mixed in with the sports genre conventions. The main character is a freshmen wimp named Sena.

He's meek and wimpy, but possesses extreme speed and running capabilities making him an easy target for the American Football club to recruit as a running back. The Devil Bats in volume one are essentially Sena as the RB, an overweight Astro Boy Kurita as the offensive center / defensive tackle, and Hiruma as the team's quarterback and team captain. The skeletal crew of a club are trying to advance in the Christmas Bowl tournament and take of a team called the cupids. The final play touchdown reminded me of the Miracle at the Meadowlands punt that DeSean Jackson got all those years ago let me just start and end it at that.Overall I really enjoyed this first volume, it was a little slow at times but that's going to happen in a volume 1 setting up who's important and what the world is like.

The art is solid with nice detailed drawings of football equipment and weight rooms. The character design leans towards the shonen cartoonish side but with characters like the borderline vampiric Hiruma it gives a lot of over the top emotion to what could be some weird jocks. It makes sense that the misfits of the Japanese school take on the obscure Americanized version of football in a way.I'll be continuing to root for the Devil Bats as I thoroughly enjoyed this manga.

The sports genre is a relatively new one for me but I picked my favorite sport to start with, and that helps. Shonen quality art with a football plot gives this a four from me. I'll be reading this throughout the entire summer to get excited for the actual NFL season in September. Sport stories always have the played out David vs. Goliath thing.

Little by little you'll learn the basics within the story and after 3 volumes you will be rooting for the heroes like they are real people. You'll see them grow stronger, you'll see them learn from defeats, you'll see them give it their all and you will grow fond of them along the way without feeling manipulated into doing so.The art is a big plus here. At the beginning you can tell the artist is just starting but after a few volumes you'll see his technique develop and enjoy it even more. One thing to note is how differently all the characters are drawn. A common complaint about manga and anime in general, is how all the characters are drawn the same except for the hair, clothes and very minor details. There is no such thing here.

All of the characters are easily distinguishable. Body mass, facial structure and expressions are all unique to each and everyone of the characters presented. It doesn't matter how minor the role, everyone is drawn differently. Another thing to note is how when the teams are playing, every time someone makes a special move, the artist draws something related to the team mascot along with the move. For example, when someone from the team 'White Knights' pushes an opponent, a detailed knight is drawn behind the character, impaling the other team's mascot.I could go on about how great this manga is like only a fan boy can, but I'll stop.

Unlike most shonen series, this one ended when it needed to end. It's always fun and never boring. If you have the time, dedicate yourself to the story regardless of your dislike for sports in general. You just might learn a thing or two. The translation flows smoothly, and the typographer chose a nice, standard font that was inoffensive. The story is a hilarious tale about high school boys' strength and dreams playing American style football in Japan which. As you may know, is not a very popular sport. Explosions, silliness and shennanigans are stuffed full in every volume with just enough interpersonal and personal character development scattered with good timing here and there - just as you might feel as if the loud, dialed up humor might be a little wearying. There are some strange stereotypes about Americans that pop up here and there regarding race and cultural norms. (Especially once the All-White-American-Team-With-Single-Black-Player shows up - but half of that story arc is meant to be a somewhat clumsy red herring that gets solved in the typical Shonen Jump Japanese schoolboy sort of way, rather than how an American would.) Over all, the writer has tried to do his research and make the story as silly, heartfelt and fun as he could make it. I think, asides from a few missteps, he largely succeeds. And yes, the humor does get a little too loud at times, but over all, it's still a very fun series.

I loved this series, which is amusing considering how little I think of sports, but Inagaki created a phenomenal cast of characters I came to adore. And this series had plenty of one of the elements I value most when reading manga, humor.37 volumes is a long time to stick with a series, but I felt it was worth it in the end, though I do admit to getting a little tired of it occasionally. The tiring aspect was that almost each time the Devil Bats were facing a new team, the odds were nearly impossible. I know they were the underdog team, but shouldn't the odds have started evening out as their team improved?
